21 Days

Sad, sad day!  Our cows have begun the process that we look forward to every Spring.  Baby calves are so cute and happily welcomed when they arrive to grace our lives.  My kids especially look forward to seeing the calves since its an event that only happens once a year.

Unfortunately, this year, we lost one.  One of our more mature cows that has had many calves over the years without any difficulties or problems delivered a beautiful, perfect bull calf today.  By the time we found him though, he was dead.  When the calves are born most times the mothers will clean off the placenta so that the baby can breath.  In this case, she had cleaned off everything but his face which had caused him to sufficate to death.

I spent the rest of the day mourning the dead calf.  I know this is not a very cheery topic, but it's how I spent the rest of  my day.  Sad day 21.
